CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The search lasted well into the night, but Kett didn’t. The heavy shotgun stock had caught him on his right cheekbone, and agony radiated from it. It felt as if his skull had been shattered. On top of that, the ringing in his ear was like a knife.

“It’s really not as bad as you think it is,” said Emily Franklin, giving him a gentle prod with a gloved finger. Kett winced. “You moan more than anyone else I’ve ever worked on.”

“The people you work on are usually dead,” Kett said, grimacing at the young pathologist.

“True,” she said, her voice muffled behind the tinnitus. “It’s not broken, just bruised. You were lucky, if they’d put their back into it they could have done some serious damage.”

“And they could have shot you,” said Clare.

“I don’t know,” said Kett. “Takes a lot of effort to miss somebody with a shotgun at that range. He could easily have finished me off.”

“We know Aiden has difficulties,” Clare said. “Maybe aiming a gun is one of them.”

“Either that, or he wanted to miss me.”

Franklin gave him a condescending pat on the head then sat on the table in front of him, removing her gloves.

“Miss Franklin, this workspace is brand new,” said Clare. “Please remove your backside from it immediately.”

Franklin rolled her eyes and pushed herself off.

“Got an autopsy to do anyway. Keep ice on it, Robert, and try not to get into any more trouble.”

“Yes sir,” Kett said with a painful smile. He watched her leave the mobile incident room, then turned to look at the Super.

“Yeah, right,” Clare said, collapsing into the chair at the head of the table. “Trouble seems to find you wherever you go.”

Kett nodded, grimacing against another round of agony. He looked at the clock on the screen, struggling to get his eyes to focus. It was almost eight.

“You’re sure you don’t want to go to the hospital?” Clare asked.

“I’m phone,” said Kett.

“Phone?” Clare asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I said fine.” Kett rubbed his temples. “Any luck with the clue?”

“It’s out there,” Clare said. “I’ve sent it to the smartest people I know, and it hit the local news this evening. We’ve got our DCs on the phones, some useful leads already. Someone will crack it.”

There was a clatter of footsteps and a second later Savage walked into the room, PC Hook right behind her. They both did a perfect double-take when they saw Kett.

“Bloody hell,” Savage said. “Are you okay?”

“He’s phone,” said Clare with a disapproving glance in Kett’s direction.

“Any luck at the farm?” Kett asked.

“Nothing yet,” she said. “We’re searching deeper in the woods, looking for graves, but we’ve pulled back until the firearms team is free. Whole new ballgame now that somebody’s taking potshots at police.”

“We’ve got a unit scouring the cliffs,” said Clare. “We’re waiting for reinforcements. No sign of Aiden Parks yet, but we’ll find him. There aren’t many places to hide in Elsham, and from what I’m hearing he’s not going to last long on his own.
